Data sharing approach to support councils' net zero plans

Local authorities across London can now benefit from a new streamlined way to share data that will help fast-track their Net Zero goals.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) and UK Power Networks have launched a collaborative approach allowing councils to submit their decarbonisation plans just once, rather than multiple times to different organisations. This ‘Share Once’ initiative will reduce duplication, save time and resources, and build a clearer city-wide picture of plans to reduce carbon emissions.

By sharing local plans for heat networks, EV chargepoints, and other low-carbon infrastructure through the GLA’s DataHub, authorities will also help UK Power Networks plan future investment in the electricity network. This data already informs UK Power Networks’ Distribution Future Energy Scenarios (DFES), ensuring that infrastructure upgrades align with local ambitions.

Open Data Portal

Our Local Area Energy Planning (LAEP) Open Data Portal takes an innovative approach to information sharing, aimed at making it easier for our stakeholders to find and use our data.

By offering open source data, we assist local authorities by significantly reducing the time spent during the early LAEP planning stages, enabling local authorities to best support their communities, while starting their LAEP journeys.

Energy toolkit: a practical guide for councils leading the net zero transition

UK Power Networks and UK100 have launched the Energy Toolkit to help local authorities take practical steps toward decarbonisation.

The toolkit provides:

  • Clear guidance on developing Local Area Energy Plans (LAEPs)
  • Support for EV rollout, energy efficiency, and clean energy projects
  • Advice on working with your DNO/DSO and accessing funding
  • Tools to engage with communities and regional partners

Available as a full guide or quick summary, the toolkit is designed to help councils understand the evolving energy system and lead their area’s Net Zero journey.

Share your plans

As a local authority, sharing information on your decarbonisation plans allows us to factor them into our future network investment.

This enables us to better support your long term net zero strategy.

Whether you are in early stages of decarbonisation planning or have a full Local Area Energy Plan, you can share your information with us to help us shape  our forecasts.

These forecasts, the Distribution Future Energy Scenarios (DFES) are published annually and provide a view of the energy system’s potential  pathways to 2050.
